Can a plus size girl wear white and look ok in it?
Friday, September 3rd, 2010I have a summer party to go to in 2 weeks. It will mostly be held outdoors and since I live in the south it will be hot and humid. I have been working on my weight but still fall in the plus size catagory. I wear a 16w/18w right now. I am self concious about my arms still so I was trying to find something with a sleeve, and my legs are heavy so I really dont wear shorts or capris. I want to look nice, and stylish for my size. I realize that I am still a larger girl so I know I wont look like a size 8 no matter what I do. I found this outfit today online that I thought was cute, and would like your opinion. Normally I know white makes you look bigger, and of course the model is not plus size (even tho the store it comes from is). So it is hard to tell. I would wear it as it is shown. Your opinions would be appreciated. Also if you have any ideas on a pretty outfit I could try I would appreciate. Thanks in advance for the help.

Plus-size girls absolutely can wear white….. it’s all about proportion not size. The trick is to wear the lightest color of your outfit (in this case white) on the smallest part of you, because it does indeed add volume, and wear the darker color in your outfit (doesn’t have to be dark, just darker in relatively speaking next to the white… could be beige!) on the largest part of you.
For example, if you are pear shaped, heaver on bottom than on top, you’d wear the lightest color (or brightest) on top. If you are very full busted and more apple shaped with a larger stomach, you’d look better with the lighter, brighter colors and patterns in your outfit on the bottom. If you are a lucky hourglass, evenly proportioned throughout, go head to toe white if you’d like! The idea is to creat visual balance using lights and darks, combined with patterns and cut.
Cut and tailoring plays a big role in how good clothes look on you too. Skinny bottoms don’t look very figure flattering on most plus body types (I know they are very trendy and now, but smart fashionistas tend to steer clear except in very special and clever styling circumstances )….. bootcut pants are much more universally flattering, along with A-line skirts.
And lastly cinch in a waist line so it doesn’t look like you are wearing a voluminous bag. Some body shapes do best higher than their natural waistline, others right at the waistline. And layering loose and flowing over close cut is another trick, especially for taller figures (Shorter should be careful because this can look matronly and dumpy if done incorrectly).
Enjoy your party!
